In 2008 Mystery Creek Lusitanos established a stud in New Zealand with an aim to breed competitive horses for the New Zealand market.

Xerife is our foundation stallion, with Bahama and Briosa being the foundation mares. All 3 horses are imported from Europe and are all fully graded and approved with the APSL in Portugal. To further develop the breed in NZ it was important to get some new lines into the mix, so in 2013 we purchased a beautiful TB mare to add to our broodmare herd. Then in early 2015 we added a new Lusitano Stallion (Jade) from Portugal to our breeding lines, allowing people a further choice when looking at breeding a Lusitano for themselves. In 2019 we welcomed a 3rd stallion Juncal Da Broa to our stud, currently the only purebred Veiga in Australasia.

Jo Bard, the proprietor of Mystery Creek Lusitanos Ltd, spent many years in England, Portugal and Ireland training, schooling, instructing and competing in several equestrian disciplines, including representing Great Britain in Working Equitation.

Whilst in the UK she gained her HND in Equine Studies and her BHS AI in instructing (both internationally recognized qualifications). During this time she was able to grow an appreciation and understanding of the Lusitano. They are highly intelligent animals that love company and always want to please. We believe that the Lusitano has many valuable assets to make an excellent sport horse regardless of your discipline.
